Milton Keynes (UK), July 2010 - There is an inherent connection between opening educational practices and quality of education. In the recent debates about the quality of OER and eLearning content in general, a structural problem becomes apparent. Nancy (FR), July 2010 - Self-evaluation is part of internal quality assurance: the process of reviewing the quality of one’s own performance and provision. According to the EFQM definition, self-evaluation or self-assessment refers to a comprehensive, systematic, and regular review of an organization's activities and results referenced against the EFQM model. The self-assessment process allows the organization to discern its strengths clearly and areas in which improvements can be made. It culminates in planned improvement actions, which are then monitored for progress.

Successful eLearning indeed requires new organizational and pedagogical models. This conflicts with the historical model that has shaped the culture of our traditional universities.

Erlangen (GER), July 2010 - Very much due to its success, user-generated content (UGC) poses a number of challenges to the current understanding of education and its institutions. Web2.0 and the corresponding tools enable learners to develop and publish learning content independently from experts' knowledge and institutional frameworks. This development has led to questions as to whether the traditional concept of "authority" is still appropriate at universities and to suggestions for the "ivory tower" of higher education to be opened to the wider world.

Graz (AT), July 2010 - Can learning be fun? Many people would not agree with this hypothesis since they remember their own educational history, which involved investing a lot of effort to pass exams in school and university. On the contrary, learning is often perceived as an exercise in getting results in the form of a certification – and for this reason, extrinsic motivation strongly dominates most of the learning process in primary and secondary education, at the university level, and even in vocational education and training.
